What neighborhood do you live in? River West, just on the other side of the highway from Enerspace.
Why did you decide to join a coworking space? I’d been working out of my living room for a while and it just wasn’t sustainable. I’ve never been good at working in isolation; I get a lot of energy and inspiration from being in a more social, community environment. Coworking also seemed like a great way to meet and learn from other small business owners and entrepreneurs who were facing the same challenges as me.
What do you do for work? I do marketing and brand strategy primarily for small and very small businesses. Specifically, we help small businesses understand figure out their target market and then develop an approach to reach those customers most effectively.
What do you do for fun? I have a one year-old daughter, so most of my free time goes to playing with her! That said, my wife and I are also part of a sailboat share and take advantage of that whenever we can.
What’s one thing about you we’d never learn just by chatting you up at the coffee bar? I worked at the CIA under about a year ago when my wife and I moved to Chicago.
What do you do to keep yourself balanced? After the CIA, it was a big deal to me to discover that there was such a thing as balance. I try to run at least 3-4 times a week; it really helps me clear my brain and keep things in perspective.
How has your business benefited from being in a coworking space? I’m pretty new so haven’t had a chance to meet everyone yet, but so far the biggest benefit has been allowing me to focus. I find that there are a lot less distractions than at home or in a coffee shop. Plus it just feels more like I’m “at work” than when I’m sitting on my couch.
