Stuff People Bring to Work to Make You Fat

My upstairs neighbor had a baby last week and I made her the requisite pans of enchiladas but she had another request – muffins with fiber. She sent me a recipe from local celebrity Heather Crosby. I had not heard of 70% of the ingredients. Chia seeds? Almond flour? So I hightailed it over to Whole Foods where I had a good shot at acquiring the items. Well who knew but Chia seeds are the new Flax seeds. Very high in fiber per calorie. And you don’t have to grind them to get the good stuff out. So I made the a double batch of the muffins: and took a dozen to work. They were immediately devoured by everyone including the five programmer dudes. Which made me think…we assume that when there’s a treat-sharing occasion at work, people want to eat donuts and cupcakes…but it turns out that they like healthy stuff that tastes good too! It is true that you can’t grab these muffins at Sweet Mandy B’s or Dunkin Donuts on your way to the office.

Let’s look at some math:
Assume you interact with about 30 people in your small office or department in a large company.
That means there are about:
3 birthdays per month.
1 major holiday each month.
1 person getting hired or leaving

That’s 5 treat days/month. The average bakery cupcake has 585 calories*. That’s 2,925 extra calories per month. It takes 3,500 extra calories to gain one pound of body weight. So in a year, you are gaining 10 pounds of cupcake weight. That’s right, TEN.

The banana, date and walnut muffins noted above each have about 238 calories, 7 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber**. Not to mention a boat load of other nutritional benefits. So you can count them as breakfast or your mid-morning snack. These are not incremental calories. They can be worked into your normal daily food intake. Cupcakes, my friend, can not.

If there are thirty of you in your office/department, let’s be really realistic and assume only 5 of you ever bother to be the ones to bring treats for occasions. How does it sound to spend an hour a month baking instead of buying and saving your office 300 cupcake pounds a year?
